I conceived this collection in 2005 for Pottery Barn Kids under the approval and art direction of Allison Spampanato. It was the first time Pottery Barn Kids
authorized the use of the color black on a final product. Released the same summer Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl debuted in theaters, this collection kicked off the popular pirate trend that continued for the rest of the decade with products that were imitated by many competitors.

As we saw it, the challenge of this job was to design a Jolly Roger such as the world had never seen before. The Pirate Collection had to be cool enough that kids would love it, but cute enough that their mothers would buy it for them. This Jolly Roger flag design, which incorporated a patch, tricorn hat, and an earring on a smiling skull, struck just the right balance, and appeared on dozens of products for several summers following its release.
